Pontiac Distributor
Pontiac distributor or distributor cap is a component of your vehicle’s ignition
system which distributes the electricity from the ignition coils to the spark
plug wires at the right timing. The composition of this device is made of hard
plastic and small amount of copper. Inside this device is the distributor rotor
which rotates during the receipt of current from the ignition coils and transmit
it to the copper portion of the cap, and then to the spark plugs.
The distributor rotor within the Pontiac distributor cap also contains metal
components which allow it to connect to the cable wires of the spark plugs of
the cylinders in the engine. The rotor is mounted on the upper end of the distributor
shaft, where two screws attach the rotor to a plate on top of the shaft. The centrifugal
advance mechanism drives the rotor as it turns the camshaft.
The Pontiac distributor is frequently bombarded with high voltages, and because
of this, it should be regularly inspected and replaced when needed. Otherwise
it will develop carbon tracking in the cap and can cause misfires in the engine.
To have a good performing Pontiac distributor, auto experts suggest that it should
be replaced once every two years or every 15,000 miles of distance traveled. Owners
of old cars should be more cautious as their distributors are more prone to damages.
The best time to check for your Pontiac distributor is during night time, because
you can easily notice the light that it gives off from the current. Just be cautious
not to touch them for they carry as much as 20,000 volts that can cause you danger.
